Path Of The Gods: Hiking the Amalfi Coast of Italy

Hiking the Path of the Gods is a must-do for any visitor to the Amalfi Coast. But what about hiking it in December? We recently took on this challenge, trading summer crowds and scorching sun for a unique winter experience. Join us as we share our adventures, insights, and stunning photos from our off-season trek along this legendary Italian trail.

On December 6th we arrived in Naples, the area's most proximal major metro. We found Naples a rather dirty city and were not disappointed to move on. We caught a bus from this train station to Bomero, the start of the Path of the Gods.

Path of the Gods Details:

  • About 6 miles

  • 1,200 ft elevation gain, lots of elevation loss

  • Moderate path with rocks and gravel

Our Packing List

Notes:

  • This trail is very popular. During the “high” season expect lots of people!

  • During the summer it can get very hot, so dress and pack accordingly

  • Positano is VERY expensive compared to nearly anywhere else in Europe. Book ahead and bring lots of cash. We opted to only spend one night here because of this + the number of people. During the “high” season prices are 2-3x what they are during the winter and food/entertainment is expensive too.

  • Cover charges are to be expected. Most restaurants will automatically tack on a cover charge to your bill. Sometimes it is a flat rate and sometimes it is a percentage. We found this to be the case in most of the popular cities in Italy.

  • Be aware of your lodging location. If you book at the top of the town you may find yourself hiking stairs 10-20 minutes each way when you want to go to the beach area.
