9 Reasons you SHOULD get a Subaru Outback

For good reason, Subaru Outbacks are the most popular wagon in America. I’ve owned a couple of trucks and a Jeep and have appreciated the capabilities of each, but I have sure grown to love this Subaru that we have now. I recognize that there is no perfect vehicle for everybody but I figured sharing why I chose and continue to enjoy this car might help you decide if it would be right for you.

1- Outstanding All-Wheel-Drive- It’s no secret that Subaru has one of the best AWD systems on the market. They really are the best for snow and ice driving.  Several videos on youtube explain the AWD system and why it's the best out there. To learn more about the Subaru AWD system watch this video.

2- Crash Safety Rating- I work full-time as a firefighter and respond to a lot of vehicle accidents, so not only does the research show that the crash safety ratings are great, but I’ve seen first hand how well Subaru’s protect their occupants in wrecks. Because of this I have always said that if I ever bought a smaller vehicle it would be a Subaru.

3- Ground Clearance- My 2016 Subaru Forester has 8.7 inches of ground clearance which is more than the Jeep Cherokee that’s flaunted for its off-road capability. Also, since the Subaru has a softer suspension not built for heavy hauling and off-roading, it drives smoother on bumpy gravel roads.

4- Built-In Roof Rails and hitch option: This saves a lot of money on a rack setup and they stow nicely when not in use. I use mine to mount a roof rack, cargo box, and awning to haul my backpacks, skis, tents or whatever else I might need for the outing.

5- Excellent Fuel Mileage - The 2.5L Engine is rated for  24-31 mpg. I have averaged about 26 while driving on and off-road in the mountains of Idaho, even with my camper build and all of my climbing, skiing, and camera gear. Money saved on fuel is more money for coffee, burritos and climbing gear. That's a win!

6- Interior is spacious and easy to camp in, especially if you build a platform and you can enjoy the car's heater or a/c for secure year-round car camping.

7- Great resale value: Because of Subarus great reputation as vehicles they have a higher than average resale value. I mean, it’s no Toyota, but its still pretty good. This doesn’t impact you during ownership but it sure is nice when it comes time to upgrade!

8- Cool Tech: The newer models have eyesight system options as well as other safety tech built in to help keep you from wrecking yourself. My mom has an ascent and I really enjoyed using the cruise control system though I’m not sure I liked the lane assist that keeps you from crossing the line.

9- Off road Models! You can now buy “wilderness” options that come from the factory with more capable tires, suspension, offroad traction control system and they just look cool. I haven’t driven one yet myself, but I’ve heard lots of good things about them and think they look pretty rad.

Overall I have found this vehicle to be one of the best options out there when looking for a off-road capable but still efficient and safe rig. I have taken my outback to places that some people wont bring their trucks and have been pleasantly surprised with its performance. If you want to see a bit more on the topic checkout my video here
